FinTechs, BigTechs and Banks—When Cooperation and When Competition?

While there is a fast-growing number of studies on FinTech, the relationships between technology companies and banks have received only limited attention in research literature. Most FinTech-bank interactions conducted so far address questions: why collaborate with FinTechs (reasons) how they do it (forms cooperation), whereas this paper aims at clarifying when most likely form their interaction cooperation competition. To cover cognitive gap, conceptual framework to help explain which factors affect type presented paper. Based extensive literature review using market-based approach, external market position were examined. It was found that therefore basic depends adoption level BigTechs individual countries/regions. The turned out be higher EMDEs lower AEs, makes more first group countries tech would tend serve as banks’ competitors, second rather or choose coopetition strategy. When analyzing internal factors, resource-based approach slightly modified IO theory applied.
